In 2006, the alliance began exploratory discussions with General Motors on the possibility of forming an industrial alliance.  The discussions were initiated by GM`s minority shareholder, Kirk Kerkorian. GM reportedly demanded the payment of billions of dollars for an alliance, leading Ghosn to describe the terms as „contrary to the spirit of an alliance.“ The discussions ended without agreement in October 2006, when Ghosn said, „It is clear that the two sides have totally different non-values for an alliance.“  Following the arrest and imprisonment of Carlos Ghosn, President and CEO of the Alliance, in November 2018, accompanied by his exit from the Alliance and its components, press analysts questioned both the stability of the Alliance`s participation agreement and its long-term existence.  These analysts also note that, given that recent business strategies of companies are interdependent, attempts to restructure the alliance could be counterproductive for all members.  The new agreement also provides for Renault to manufacture a Mitsubishi-branded van based on its traffic supplier sold in the Oceania region. Renault Group and Nissan are the first car manufacturers to explore driverless mobility services with Waymo in France and Japan – Exclusive agreement to focus first on driverless mobility services for people and goods in France and Japan. The three companies will be merged by a cross-sharing agreement. The structure was unique in the automotive industry during the consolidation period of the 1990s and later served as a model for General Motors and PSA Group and Mitsubishi, as well as the Volkswagen and Suzuki Group, although the latter combination failed.  The alliance itself has significantly expanded its scope and entered into other partnerships with car manufacturers such as Daimler, Dongfeng of China and AvtoVAZ in Russia.  In July 2012, the Renault-Nissan Alliance announced that it had invested 170 billion won ($160 million) in Renault Samsung Motors, the South Korean company that bought Renault in 2000. This new investment increases the possibility of producing up to 80,000 Nissan Rogue Crossover Sport-Utility vehicles per year at the Renault Samsung Motors plant in Busan, taking advantage of Korea`s free trade agreements with the United States and the European Union, as well as favorable currency exchanges.
 The Busan plant already produces Renault Samsung SM3, SM5, SM6 and SM7 sedans as well as QM5 crossover sedans. Some of the production is exported to other markets under the name Renault Koleos.
